I saw this on Martha's site:

and on baking911

I have to admit that I don't trim my cake layers.
Do you?

I always just flip the top layer to face down. I'm going to try trimming the layers next time. I've never been much for baking cakes myself, so that explains it. I tend to bake cupcakes most often. Familyfun has sooo many fun cupcake decorating ideas.

I couldn't believe these cupcakes:

Pretty, but who has that much time? lol

I haven't made cakes in years. For birthdays, I just buy one.

I often make cupcakes though, however don't decorate them much.

I make cakes quite often and I do trim the tops to make them level. There is a handy tool for doing this and it really helps if you are using the cake for display.
