View Full Version : Can you close your home office door?

I think most homes have home offices now, if they don't, at least they have a place where the computer sits and mail collects.
I used to always like a closable office so that if I was trying to concentrate, I'd just close the door and get to work. Now my "office" is part of the loungeroom and open for all to see. I can even concentrate if the TV is on so I think it's just a matter of getting used to how things are. If my kids were young I'd make sure the computer was where I could see the screen, but they're grown up now.
What's your home office like, are you closed or open plan?

Our rolltop desk & our computer are both in our livingroom. Maybe things will get moved around after the kids move out but probably not. Once things find a home in our house, that's where they usually stay because it "works". :)
I can, but never do. The door is always open. I can be in here and see the kids in the next room because our hall is a short L shaped hallway.
If I need to focus or concentrate, I wait until they're in bed and if Gabe needs to study, I take the kids downstairs or out of the house. :)

There is a door to our office and it can be closed. The office is a small room off of the playroom, so with it open, I can see what the kids are doing. Patrick's favorite activity is opening and closing the door. So, sometimes it's open...sometimes it's closed.
Our office, is also the spare bedroom. Jack does do the bills etc... up there and usually keeps the door opened.
My computer is down in the dining room and I can listen to the TV and chat on here at the same time. :)

I don't have an office per se. My computer is in our upstairs foyer, close to my sewing room. I wish I did have a seperate room for an office.

Our 'office' is in our spare bedroom so yes, I can currently close the door. As part of our remodeling though, dh wants to have the spare bedroom be a functional bedroom and move the desk and computer to the living room.
The office is technically Mel's office since he is the main one who works from there. He is usually in there preparing lesson plans. It is a separate room but does not have a door. It's at the end of the kitchen hallway and serves as his den as well. It's the one place that I know not to mess in and heaven forbid I throw away anything.

No. Ours (computer, etc) is in the large dining room.
My personal desk is a few feet away inside the kitchen.

We do have an office, and you can close the door but a stack of boxes will fall down!
DH is a major computer geek, so he has always had his "office". When we first moved in, I set my computer up on the kitchen table. Eventually, I decided that I really resented him having his own office and I had to work on the kitchen table, so we re-arranged the office so that we each have our own desk and an our own computers in one room (DH had to get rid of a bookcase and a lot of books to do this). It took DH a while to get used to "sharing," but it has worked really well for us for the past year and a half.

My "office" is in the basement. I don't have a door and the actual office is a through space to my in-laws apartment. Fortunately, they have a door on the apartment. The only other thing down here is dh's hobby room which also doesn't have a door. But, I can't even see him from my desk so it works out. We can both concentrate and still know that the other isn't far away.
Our other computer is upstairs in the family room, I don't use it anymore but I like that if the kids are using it I can keep an eye on them.
So, no doors...I wish sometimes I did...with a lock!

We have a door as the office is set up in one of our spare bedrooms!
But it is never closed as the dog just wanders in and out when he feels like it! :)

Well yes but.........currently the computer desk in sitting in an extra closet in our bedroom, dh took the closet doors off and pushed the desk in. I don't like it here and hopefully we can move it all back downstairs into our bonus room but for now that is where it is. So I can shut our bedroom door if have to.

We can close the door, but when we are in there we never do. The only time it is closed is when no one is in there. The door has a lock too. Only lock when not in use.
We ended up removing the office door completely. lol The door opened into the room and left very little space on Gabe's side of the built in desk, so I suggested we just remove the door. I like it this way now. We never closed it anyway.
