How do you get past getting dirty?

First of all, I have a black thumb, I can kill just about anything. LOL But the worst part is getting dirty! I can not stand having my hands dirty and stuff under my nails. Ewwwww, gives me the heebie geebies just thinking about it! I know to use gloves outside and I do, but how do you get past that icky feeling?

Let's not forget the bugs too! Mainly it is the flying ones, you know, gnats, flies and bees. If it is too buggy out, I don't even mow the lawn. I tend to get all uptight and anxious from swatting them away. I just hate them!

With Jack working at the new job and being gone for long hours, the outside upkeep now falls to me. How am I ever going to get it done?

I don't like the creepy bugs that hide under wood and rocks, but other than that I am ok. I don't like dirt under my fingernails either. I wear gloves most of the time. I don't like weeding and so much of my gardening is weeding. ugh

We're still yard clearing so much too, so it's a lot of labor with dragging branches etc.

I guess grubs and snails/slugs freak me out too. It seems it doesn't matter what I do I still come across them.

Then it comes hosta buying time and planting perennials and all the nasty stuff isn't the main focus. :)

I am the world's messiest gardener! I can look at dirt and it jumps on me. LOL I try to wear gloves as much as possible, but most of the time I don't because they hamper me more than help me. I come in and scrub and scrub and scrub my hands with a loofah type sponge. Bugs creep me out, too. Bees freak me out a little.

I don't like to wear gloves & actually like feeling the dirt with my hands. I usually only wear them when I'm working with rough stuff. Just get out the orange smelling pumice soap stuff & nail brush and I'm good to go.

I try to get out in the yard really early and usually only have to deal with mosquitoes & I spray myself for them. If the bugs are really bad I stay inside or wear this net that covers my head. Spring is really bad for black flies & gnats. Getting out as soon as it's light & cool is my fav time to garden.

I love getting dirty, the dirtier the better. I don't wear gloves nor shoes. I want my feet in the dirt.

I don't like flies or mosquitoes though. spray myself as well especially now with the West Nile virus threat.

Darlene I do the same as you - getting out early. Nothing like working in the garden early in the morning when its still quiet except for the birds. Love it.

I get $1 gloves at dollar store. You can also get $1 pads to kneel on.

I have tried many pairs of gloves, but they always seem to get in my way so I resort to working the garden barehanded. I get dirty. Its just part of it!

Then I have to scrub it all off with a fingernail brush. The worst part is that the dirt is so drying to my hands, but other than that I don't mind getting dirty!

When I was still in college and working in a lawn and garden center, a glamorous looking woman came in to choose some annuals for planting in her containers or her garden. She said, "Sweetie, would you pick those up for me, I just had my nails done." This was before the you-stick-them-on false nails, and she no doubt had on some expensive set of salon nails. I wanted to belt her, but didn't.

But all in all, I don't mind the dirt. The only thing I don't like about gardening is snakes.
