View Full Version : What is your pantry like?

I'm not talking about what's in it, just wondering what the space is like. Ours juts into our kitchen like a small closet, and has 4 wire shelves inside. I don't like the shelves because the wire slats are too far apart for some things that we buy. I also find that I "forget" about things that I store on the floor of the pantry - they get pushed to the back and forgotten. Heck, I was straightening the mess of plastic bags yesterday and guess what I found in one of them? A 5lb bag of potatoes.

I like the fact that the location is convenient, and I like having one, but I wish I could change the shelving. We rent an apartment (in a large complex) so this probably isn't possible.

I used to have one like that in an apartment in El Paso. I cut pieces from a cardboard box to cover the wire shelves and keep things from falling through the gaps. Then I covered the cardboard with shelf paper, which I usually use anyway, and for years after the apartment continued to carry them around - they'r fairly useful for a lot of things.

My current kitchen has NO pantry, and very little cabinet and counter space. It is a pain in the neck. I end up using the stove for storage and the washing machine and dryer tops for counter space, and the microwave, bread machine, and coffee pot live in the living room. When I use the crockpot, it gets set up and then plugged in in the garage.

Hope you enjoy your pantry more now ;-)

Ours is just regular kitchen cabinets from the floor to the ceiling (6 or 7 shelves - can't remember which). It's inconvenient because it's deep, so it's easy to lose things. Dishpans are too wide to fit because of a wooden slat in the middle so I store some things in 9x9 baking pans or 11x9 baking pans that I can pull out and see what I have.

Aren't those deep shelves annoying? I've always coveted the ones where the whole thing slides out and you have a sideways view(from each side) that isn't so deep. A friend of mine who had them says they're a pain to clean though.

Ours is like a closet in the kitchen. The door is clouded glass that has the word "Pantry" etched into it, as well as an etching of a cornucopia. It's very pretty. The shelves are wooden and there are 4 of them, along with space on the floor where I have gallons of water (just in case). The shelves are a little deep, as well, which, I agree, makes it difficult to find the stuff in the back. But, I love it.
