A comment in another tread made me start this question.
We live across the street (on the diagonal) from fire station #1, the busiest one in our small town of about 6,000 people.
We live in arid OK territory so lots of fires in warm weather plus a town of alcohol abuse etc, plus tornados, high winds, etc. It is pretty busy...lights going most of the night and some siren noise....when they put up they have this funny little whirr siren noise. You definitely know they are there. The noon/tornado whistle is right over our heads about.

We live one block from the fire station. When there is a fire here in our small town, the siren blows and blows. Thats to get all the fireman to the fire.

We are right between 2 fire stations. One is about 2 miles north of us and is a volunteer station. The other is a little over a mile south of us and is a fully staffed and paid station. It's located at the small local airport. They are both very crucial in this area because we have so much vacant land and brush fires occur every year (one was directly behind us a few acres away a couple of weekends ago).

We are served by a volunteer fire department about 2 miles away. However, when our house was struck by lightning, the VFD from the next town up came. It is probably about the same distance away. They responded first because there were so many calls that night.
We are about 2 miles from our volunteer fire department.

We are about 3 blocks from ours, but ours also has the slowest response time in the county. Hence, our home owners insurance is double!

There are 2 less than a mile away from us. We hear the sirens all the time. Everytime something happens around here, no matter what kind of call they send police, fire and ambulance so when you hear one siren, there are usually 2 or 3 more that follow.
We're pretty close to two. It's far enough not to be annoying, but loud enough where you know it's close. lol We live off a fairly busy road, so even if it were further away, we'd still hear the sirens as it was going to the call. Our city is pretty quiet for being a city, but I definitely noticed the difference when we moved here. I could hear cars our first night sleeping here and thought I'd never get used to it. Now I barely notice it. Even Zachary noticed the difference with the sound of cars. Sorta sad in a way.

this is one of those things I'll have to check on. I should know that answer after living here almost a year.
