Thats one thing I really miss in our home is a fireplace. Guess a girl can't have everything.

Does a woodstove count? It has a glass front so we can see the flames.

Yes we have a fireplace. But. it was struck by lightning about 4 years ago. We had the chimney rebuilt and never really used it because DD#1 was so young.

One evening DH decided to try a fire for the girls. It worked fine, but I told him I thought the house was a little smoky smelling. I decided that it was just because we hadn't had a fire for so long.

So, DH takes both DDs to NJ to visit him mom. I am all alone in the house. I decide a fire, pjs, a book and a glass of wine were just the ticket. So I opened the damper and started my fire. The smoky smell began again, and I checked - the flue was open adn drawing.

So, I lie down, open my book and just when I start unwinding ALL the smoke detectors in our house start going off! I tried to douse the fire, but it was one of those duraflame things and I finally had to soak the ashes and break up the log and bury it.

Mean time I ma losing my hearing from the alarms, and fearing that I have caught the house on fire while my family is away.

I turned the ceiling fans up, the AC/Heat fans on constant and headed upstairs. I grabbed the first blanket I found which was a crocheted job, and began fanning the detector upstairs.

The crocheted blanket got caught on the cold air return upstairs. I felt like Lucy wondering where the heck is Ethel and why isn't she helping me get these doggone smoke detectors off!

They finally stopped and all was well, but relaxation was shot and we haven't had a fire since.

We need to get the chimney inspected. We are thinking that there must be a crack in the mortar where they rebuilt the chimney and it is not drawing enough.

We have a woodstove (closed) that sits on a huge brick hearth. The hearth has a mantel, but I think it is kind of weird having the mantel run BEHIND the flue for the stove. Plus I don't want to put anything flammable on it. I've got a collection of crocks on the mantle now.

I miss a fireplace, but I think you may get more heat from a woodstove (unless you've got a fireplace insert). If we ever add a family room on to this house, I'll be sure the new room has a fireplace.

No. We wanted to put in a woodburning stove though. Never have gotten it done.

The house my parents had next door to current one (we are hoping to get it sometime) does have a fireplace type thing.

We have a small fireplace but we have never used it. I bought a candle holder that looks like fire logs and put in it. We have looked into getting gas logs but haven't decided yet on that. I grew up with a wood stove in the living room and kitchen and then in the basement of the house my parents live in now. It took me a long time to get used to other heat sources when I moved away from home.

We have two fireplaces. Both wood burning. One in the living room and one in the family room. We use the family room most often because it has a nice hearth we can sit on. I'd love to have a wood burning stove, so we could heat with wood.

We put a wood burning fireplace insert into our fireplace that made it into a woodstove.:) So glad we did, it really has helped us use less oil. This past winter we used 219 gal of oil to heat our 3 bedroom 1 bath home.

I have always liked the idea of a real wood burner or multi-fuel stove, sadly we live in a smoke free zone ( no real fires allowed in our area :( ....)

We have a small faux Gas fire inset into a Marble Hearth, it is nice and warm when lit, Suzy ( the furbaby) loves to toast her belly in front of it :D but the best bit, it is instant!!!!! :D

There is one, and the mantle for it is gorgeous. However, it's long since been walled up and the chimney closed off. :( I would love to have it run in the winter, that's for sure!

Bright Blessings!

We have 4 gas log fireplaces. One in Mel's office, 1 in the living room, 1 in the playroom and 1 in the downstairs den. The one in the playroom rarely ever gets used.

We have one, but DH won't let a fire burn in it... He doesn't like the hassle... I would love to have a fire in the fireplace.. Oh well, DH wants to get a pellet stove insert in the next year or so.. Electric heat is way too expensive.

We have a woodburner in the living room and heat our house exclusively with it all winter. It has a glass door so we can enjoy watching the fire without the danger of the sparks. I love it :)

No we don't and I miss the warmth it gives off. With DH away all week I'm not comfortable running it by myself. If it wasn't so expensive to run I'd love an electric wood stove. My parents have one and it's so cozy.

Yes we have a wood burning one, but it's never been used.

yes, we have two. The one in the living room gets used all late fall/winter as we spend most of our time there. The one in our lower level doesn't get used nearly as much. DS and his girlfriend light a fire on occasion when they're here. Both are wood-burning.

I wish we had a fireplace in our apartment (half of a duplex) as a backup source of heat in case the power fails or we run out of oil. But we don't.
