Whenever dh decides something needs work or a new "home" project, we call at least 3 companies to give us estimates and then he always decides to do it himself. It takes longer but we save money and he always does a good job and will get someone that knows what they are doing to help out if need be but I always ask him why he bothers to get estimates? He says so we know how much we are saving by doing it ourself.
Is you dh/so that way? Do you all have other people come in and do the work, or do you do it yourself?
We are so not do it yourself-ers over here. Mostly because of trying to juggle the two kids to get anything done. I'd rather pay to have a professional do some things than have my nerves shot trying to do it ourselves. Painting was a major ordeal here. That left me feeling less than enthusiastic over tackling anything larger. :o

Definitely. I'm so proud of that man, he can do just about anything. If he doesn't know he asks at a hardware store and then he goes to the library and finds a book that explains everything. He did all his own electrical and had it inspected by a licensed electrician and it passed. He's done plumbing too. Although it might take longer than what a profession would do, he still gets it done.

Since we moved to our homestead last May, dh has a bigger area to work and has really thrown himself back into projects. We're remodeling pretty much the whole house and are doing as much of it as we can ourselves (which includes dh building the vanity cabinets for the bathrooms and all the kitchen cabinetry).

We do everything ourselves, and I mean everything. But my whole family is handy, so there are always plenty of people to help out, and we then help them out also. The only thing we paid somebody to do was install windows (wallside windows). We wanted to warrenty because we are going to sell and thought that might be a selling point.

Jack's great at lots of home improvement projects but not all. He especially good at fixing things that break down like appliances etc.
He does call a plumber if welding is involved & carpenter when we had the porch changed into an all season room and roofers for roofing the house. Also calls the tree guy for cutting down trees that threaten the house, all others he does.

Oh, yes. He does most of the house repair, plumbing repair and car repair and he's building a 2 story playhouse for the girls.
