A few things I found that help me to sleep.
~not watching the news at 10 p.m.
~reading while everyone else is in bed. I find if I have some quiet "me" time, I'm far more relaxed when I climb into bed.
~putting drops of lavendar on my pillow

I use a lavendar spray on my linens. I read before I go to bed. I use ear plugs to block out the ambient noise from DH watching tv. I also bought a white sound machine which I use for 15 -20 minutes every night.

DH puts a book on tape on the stereo. We're both out in minutes.

I always read something too. I usually pick something a little dry or technical and it helps  Right now my bedtime book is "The Scientific Search for the Soul" and it's all about cognitive vision.

Usually I don't have any trouble falling asleep when I first go to bed. But I have started having periods of wakefullness in the middle of the night -- I roam downstairs to go to the bathroom 2 or 3 times and just can't get comfortable back in bed. When I can't stand it any more, I drink a cup of milk and eat a few saltine crackers. I don't know if it has any real effect or if it is all in my head, but after I do that I can go back to sleep after a while.
Reading also is very helpful -- and I've had to turn on the light in the middle of the night so I can read for 10 minutes or so to relax enough to get to sleep.
Another thing I've done in the past is to visualize my flower garden/vegetable garden and plan it all for the next season.
