Did you know exactly what you wanted or was it sort of hit or miss. Or when you went to the store you saw a piece you fell in love with and bought it.

I've known for a while what I wanted. I decided that we'd go with leather for not only the looks of it but the durability of it as well. We wanted to spend once and use it forever.

There are only 2 actually 3 pieces of furniture that I knew I wanted and I went and found them.......our curio/grandfather clock that sits in my entry way and my dinning room table and hutch. All the other stuff we just saw and liked.......not so much anymore but it has served us well over the 18 years we have been in this house and it is surviving 2 dks, dh, any number of friends and family and a dog so I can't really complain!!:)

The set I wanted wasn't exactly kid friendly. I did purchase a nice set of livingroom furniture, but it was chosen based on our entire family vs. what I particularly liked.

It's so difficult purchasing furniture you want when you have kids. We bought a good couch when we moved here and ds#2 broke it. Thankfully we had a warranty on it and they fixed it for us. Once the kids are all gone, we will be purchasing a good living room set and one to our liking. We might have a problem though because dh and I don't see eye to eye on living room furniture.

I knew what I wanted. It had to be a durable fabric and not show dirt. I have 2 big dogs who lay at my feet against the sofa, my last sofa was cream colored. Never will do that again. Now I have dark plaid lazy boy sofa and loveseat in the family room. I have had them for several years and love them.

Ours has been bought piece by piece according to need at the time or given to us. Our first big purchase was a rolltop desk.:)
