We had always had a dream of owning an old Victorian home. We did a search on the internet and found a home we liked. Once we seen it in person, I was hooked. It was exactly what we wanted and the price was right.
I never dreamt we'd find our home on the internet.

We were looking for a place with some acreage and the area where we lived was WAY too expensive. I happened upon a newspaper of listings at the grocery store one day and picked it up. We looked at it that weekend and wondered about this place, we weren't sure about moving 2 hours from "home" though. We looked at the property and house in the spring, knew it had potential but didn't act on it right away. The real estate agent called us before Christmas that year and asked us again about it...we came back 2 days after Christmas, and the time was right. We listed our home in February, sold it 2 weeks later and moved in April. We've been here for 5 years to the day (tomorrow)
As soon as we moved we sided the house (it was insul brick on the outside) and knocked a wall out in the kitchen to open up the porch and kitchen. We did painting and papering but not much to the inside since. Still waiting for my new bathroom!
We've done LOTS outside, took down the old fence lines and made our yard alot bigger, built a barn yard around the barn for the horses....we are on 8 acres and love the space. Lots of gardens...we knew it had potential and are still working on it...I don't think it'll ever be totally done...always something to do.
Mel and I designed our house and then built it. He did almost all of the construction himself with 1 guy he hired as a helper. He did hire someone to do the larger items like the heating systems. We did not have any electricity out here as it was being built, so the whole house was built using just generators for electricity. It took about 3 years to really get the house built and another 6 months to a year to get it really livable.
We both had houses before this one so there was quite a lot of stuff to be gotten rid of first.
Basically, was just looking for a home that was practical and in our price range. I wanted a nice layout and enough storage space, larger rooms, nice sized yard, and fireplace.

Sara talking of homes. Did they ever fix the bricks on the front of your house?

The backyard sold both DH and I. Our boys were little when we bought our house and they needed lots of room to play. The yard was big, 1 acre and completly private thanks to previous owners plantings and it was not near the road. The boys are grown and gone and I still love my yard.

We so wanted a home with a waterfront view, fireplace & acreage. Didn't get my extra 1/2 bath or big kitchen but I did get everything else on my dream list.:)

It took us a while to find a house. We kept going further & further north until we found houses in our price range. We also looked for a new home due to the lead paint in older homes. I am so glad that we didn't get some of the houses we put in offers for because if we had, I never would have been able to become a SAHM (we under-bought for what we were told we could afford, and at the time I was working FT too)

Dh and I had been married 10 months when we bought our home, I can still remember how excited I was. We chose it because it was away from the bigger cities in our area, at the time it was a little dairy community. It took the builder 21 months to get the house built and we finally moved in.....in December of 1987. During that 21 months we got pregnant and had dd, she was 5 months old when we finally got into the house!!

So what was the price of your dream home and did you have any plan to make it on modern base. Although I also like such kind of homes but I give extra marks on modern base home as this one will be according to the requirnent of present day and you can enjoy it as well.
