I went into a thrift store for the first time in a long time yesterday. One thing I have been looking for for a long time is a table and chairs set - right now we have a particleboard table with a broken legs and two plastic lawn chairs. I want a really nice $3000 set out of Crate and Barrel furniture eventually, but I am looking for something to tide over in the meantime (probably about 10 years or so).

Anyway, this thrift store had 2 kitchen sets - a table (about 4' round) and 4 chairs, plus a lead - real wood, looked like pine - for $195. I guess I thought it was expensive for a thrift store, but it looked almost brand new. Can anyone tell me if this is a good price?

I think it depends on whether you're buying at a garage sale or thrift store actually, at least in my area. That price doesn't sound too bad for a thrift store, if it's really nice and new looking. AND they might haggle a bit. At a garage sale I think $100 is a big price. jmho

Gabe purchased a huge oak semi-formal diningroom set at our local thrift store for roughly that amount. It has 6 upholstered chairs. I considered it a fair deal since new it would have been a few thousand. It's in awesome condition.

I guess it's the quality of the kitchen sets. Here I've seen some kitchen sets for under $200 new, but aren't the best quality. I'd still purchase these sets myself..they aren't shoddy by any means. I think $200 is a pretty fair amount for solid wood set, but I do think you could find a better deal if you can hold out for a better deal. Maybe start checking your classified ads.
